Apparel/Clothing Design

The Apparel/Clothing Design program emphasizes creative thinking and technical skill. Students become proficient in manual and computer methods of pattern development and implement apparel structuring methods appropriate for custom design and industry production. In their courses, students explore costume history, social and cultural meanings of apparel, the textile and apparel consumer, and aesthetics. A required internship ensures that students gain professional experience.

Students entering the program should have clothing construction/assembly competence and a working knowledge of microcomputers and software.

Students are initially admitted to the one-year pre-apparel/clothing design program where they begin with courses in fundamental aspects of clothing construction and design. Upon completion of the foundation level courses, students must then apply for a competitive portfolio review, which upon passing they advance to the clothing design major where they take intensive design studios.

NOTE: The design studio courses in the program are sequenced over eight consecutive semesters (four years) regardless of the number or types of courses that were completed prior to the term of admission.
