Information for Students

Attention students:

The College of Design Mentor Program is open to undergraduate students (who have completed 30 credits or more) and graduate students from all of the programs within the college.  A mentor is not guaranteed to all students who apply, but we do our best to match as many applicants as possible.

For more information about working with a mentor, view the short online presentation.

When completing your application, please be as specific as possible about your goals and interests. We want to match you with a mentor who will be a good fit.  Therefore, it is important that you provide us with detailed information to help us make an appropriate match.  As you respond to the questions in the application, please keep in mind the mentors and program office will be reading your application.  Take some time to reflect on your short and long term goals as well as your career interests.  In your responses, be clear and concise and make sure to proofread!

Keep in mind, this is NOT a job-placement program, but rather a way for you to learn more about the industry and begin making connections with professionals.

Benefits of working with a mentor:

  • Learn to articulate academic and career goals.
  • Establish contacts within your industry.
  • Enhance your visibility as an emerging professional.
  • Develop professional, communication and relationship skills.
  • Jumpstart your transition from college to career.
  • Gain a mentor’s perspective on translating learning to practice.
  • Nurture your capacity for leadership.

Role as a student:

  • Discuss your needs and expectations with your mentor up front.
  • Be committed to carry out agreed upon goals.
  • Be receptive to suggestions and feedback.
  • Do not expect your mentor to answer every question you have; Network through your mentor to meet other people and gain access to professional resources.
  • Show appreciation for your mentor’s support and assistance.
